Getting started with FreeCharityReceipts

Updated

FreeCharityReceipts makes donation receipts for U.S. nonprofits. You fill in a form, and the receipt downloads as a PDF. You then give it to the donor yourself.

What is free

You don't need an account for your first receipt. Each EIN gets one free receipt per day, for a cash gift of up to $10,000 USD. There is no card and no sign-in. Details are in Free tier.

What needs credits

You need credits, or a pass, for:

  • more than one receipt a day for the same EIN
  • a gift over $10,000
  • a non-cash gift, or a receipt that uses IRS Option B (goods or services were provided). See Gift types.
  • Bulk
  • a correction to a receipt you already issued

A cash receipt costs 1 credit. Non-cash receipts, Option B receipts and corrections cost 2. A pass covers all of these, including Bulk. See Credits and passes for prices.

Make your first receipt

  1. Go to Create a receipt.
  2. Fill in Organization Information, including your EIN (Employer ID Number) and Authorized Signature.
  3. Fill in Donor Information and Gift Information.
  4. Check the IRS Acknowledgment Statement. The first choice is already selected, and it is right for a plain cash gift.
  5. Click Generate Receipt. If you are signed in, you click Preview Receipt first, then Generate Receipt in the preview.
  6. The PDF downloads. A copy is also sent to your Organization Email.

The full walk-through is in Create a receipt.

Good to know

  • Receipts are downloads only. FreeCharityReceipts doesn't print or mail receipts. You give the PDF to the donor yourself or, if you pay with credits or a pass, email it from the form.
  • Receipts are in English.
  • FreeCharityReceipts is not a donor database. It has no saved receipts and no receipt history. If you close the tab, you start over. Keep your PDFs. See What we keep.
  • If you spot a mistake after issuing a receipt, you can issue a correction. It costs 2 credits.
  • For what the IRS expects a written acknowledgment to contain, see What an IRS written acknowledgment must contain.
