Non-cash (gift-in-kind) receipts
Updated
Use a non-cash receipt when the donor gave an item, not money. It needs a signed-in account and costs 2 credits, or it is covered by a pass. See Gift types.
Steps
- On Create a receipt, sign in.
- Under Gift Information, choose Non-cash gift (donated item) in Type of Gift. A Non-cash gift details box appears.
- In Description of Item, describe the item. It must be at least 5 characters and no more than 50, because of the receipt layout. A counter shows how many you have used.
- Enter the Donor-declared value ($). The form says "For your records only. The receipt does not print a value."
- Choose the IRS Acknowledgment Statement. For a plain donated item, the first one is right.
- Fill in the rest of the form as usual, then preview and generate.
Who values the gift
The form says "Per IRS guidelines, the donor is responsible for determining the fair market value of non-cash contributions." FreeCharityReceipts doesn't appraise anything, and the Create form has no valuation fields. The Donor-declared value ($) you enter is for your own records and is not printed.
What the receipt shows
The receipt prints a Description: row with your item description and no value at all: no Amount:, no Donor-declared Value: and no Tax-Deductible: row. The thank-you line and the email to the donor leave the amount out as well. The IRS says an acknowledgment for a non-cash gift describes the item but doesn't value it. See What an IRS written acknowledgment must contain.
For how donors value property, and when donors of larger gifts need Form 8283 or an appraisal, see IRS rules for non-cash gifts.
What FreeCharityReceipts does not do
It doesn't collect or keep an appraisal, invoice or photo. Keep your supporting records yourself.
If something goes wrong
- Non-cash gift (donated item) is greyed out and says (Credits Required): you are signed out. Sign in.
- Item description must be at least 5 characters: write a longer description.
- You need 2 credits for this receipt type but only have N.: a non-cash receipt costs 2 credits. See Credits and passes.
